Open your PDF in Preview. You can either open Preview from your Dock or Launchpad then open your PDF by going to File > Open or you can navigate to your PDF in Finder, right-click it, and select Open With > Preview

Select the box next to “Encrypt.” This will code your PDF so people can’t view it without entering the correct password.

If you don’t want to encrypt the original PDF, change the “Export As” and “Where” fields.

Enter a password. In the “Password” field, enter your password, then repeat in the “Verify” field. This is the code everyone will need to use to view the PDF.

Click Save Your PDF will be exported with the options you selected, like being password protected. You can send this PDF to others, but to open it, they will need the password you entered previously.

Once they have opened the PDF with the password, they will need to re-enter the password if the document is closed.
