  1. Open Run dialog box by Pressing the Windows key + R.
  2. Type CMD into the Run dialog and press Enter.
  • Open windows Command Prompt.
  • One by one, type the following commands into the elevated Command Prompt.
  • Enter after typing in each one and waiting for one command to be successfully executed before typing in the next command.
  • net stop WuAuServ
  • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  • net start WuAuServ
  • Close the Windows Command Prompt
  • When done, simply launch Microsoft Security Essentials, try to check for and install any available updates
